Tour Overview

In November of 2024 the Saudi-Arabian football team travelled to Salou, Spain to participate in the Football Federations Cup U16.

On November 10, 2024, the U16’s from Saudi Arabia started their trip to Salou, Spain to participate in the Football Federations Cup U16. The team stayed at the beautiful Sol Port Cambrils hotel, a location equipped with all necessary facilities. After checking in, the players enjoyed dinner before heading to bed, ensuring they were well-rested for the days ahead.

The first two days of the trip were dedicated to training, to ensure the best possible preparation for their opening match. Mornings included team meetings and some free time, allowing players to use the hotel gym or enjoy a swim in the pool. The afternoons were fully focused on football, as head coach Michel Salgado put his team through with two intensive training sessions to prepare the team for their first game.

The opening match took place on November 14 against the Danish football team. Despite their thorough preparations, Denmark proved to be a formidable opponent. The Saudi team gave their best effort, but the Danish side were well organized and ruthless in front of goal, resulting in a disappointing 4-0 loss. However, there was little time to dwell on the defeat as the Tigers of Asia awaited on November 15.

The second match of the tournament, against the Republic of Korea, showed a completely different Saudi team. The earlier defeat was left behind as the players demonstrated their determination and skills, leading to a well-deserved 3-0 victory. With 3 points on the board this gave the Saudis all to play for in their last match as their opponents Poland awaited also with 3 points from 2 games.

During the 2 days before their final match head coach Michel Salgado put his team through their paces with 2 training sessions.

On November 18, the final match of the tournament awaited, against Poland. The game was incredibly thrilling, with both teams creating numerous chances and engaging in fierce battles. The fighting spirit of both teams and some remarkable saves by the goalkeeper, were the reason this match ended in a hard-fought 0-0 draw, meaning that it had to be decided by penalties. Poland narrowly won the penalty shoot-out 4-3.

Following the final match, the team returned to the hotel for their last lunch in Spain before heading to the airport for their return to Riyadh.

This was a successful tournament for the Saudi’s as they got a great experience for their players. This generation of the players are part of Saudi project to have a strong, well-equipped team who will hopefully do their nation proud when their host the FIFA World Cup in 2034.
