Football in Los Angeles

The MLS (Major League Soccer) is the football competition of North America, with teams from the United States and Canada. The Californian city of Los Angeles is home to two MLS teams: Los Angeles FC and LA Galaxy.

Both clubs are part of the Western Conference, as the MLS is divided into an Eastern and Western part.

Well-known football players like David Beckham, João Moutinho, Steven Gerrard, Javier Hernández, Zlatan Ibrahimović and Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández have all played for clubs from Los Angeles. The derby between both teams is called El Tráfico.

LA Galaxy is one of the MLS’s most successful teams. Their trophy cabinet includes a record-breaking five MLS Cups and eight Western Conference regular season titles.

In 2007, the soccer club made international headlines by signing David Beckham from Real Madrid.

This was the most high-profile transaction within the MLS up to that point. The club is regarded as the MLS’s second most valuable club, after Atlanta United.
